Equine Casteration Post-Operative Instructions

Medications

May vary depending on the individual horse.

  • Your horse has received a tetanus vaccine, phenylbutazone (bute), and one dose of antibiotics that will last 4 days

  • No additional medication should be required unless recommended by your veterinarian

General Care

  • Please keep your gelding separate from any females for 2 weeks following castration

  • Keep him confined until the morning to prevent disruption of the blood clot

  • After this, turn him out and trot him for 20 minutes twice daily to encourage drainage and prevent excessive swelling

  • Full work can begin 2 weeks after castration

Normal Observations

  • Mild scrotal swelling is normal and will usually resolve in 10-14 days

  • Slow dripping of blood following castration is not uncommon and should resolve within a few hours

Call Your Vet If

  • Excessive swelling or swelling that does not resolve

  • Smelly discharge that looks like pus

  • Lameness or reluctance to move

  • Herniation (tissue hanging from the scrotal site)

  • Steady stream of blood coming from the incision site
